Brian, now 14 years old, lives with his maternal grandmother due to the loss of his father when he was 8 and his mother’s subsequent remarriage. His grandmother, a hardworking peasant employed on local plantations, does her best to ensure that Brian’s needs are met. Although he struggles with chest pain and recurring flu, Brian excels in his studies and dreams of a future as a teacher.
