Maria, a 9-year-old third grader, lives with her hardworking peasant farmer parents, who struggle daily to provide for the family’s basic needs and support their children’s education. Unfortunately, frequent challenges such as bad weather and pest infestations lead to unstable yields from their farm, limiting their resources. As a result, Maria has been unable to obtain proper treatment for her chronic leg pain, which adversely affects her academic performance and daily activities at home.
