Flavia is a 14-year-old sixth grader living with her single mother. After her parents underwent a bitter separation when she was 12, a custody battle ensued. During this period, her mother, unwilling to let go of custody, took Flavia from home. Her father, who operates a small sweet banana stall as a peasant, remains part of the ongoing dispute. Meanwhile, her mother, also a peasant, works hard to support them. While Flavia has had a minor case of malaria, she remains in good health and excels in her studies.
