Nine-year-old Martha, a Grade Four pupil, lives with her paternal aunt, a peasant farmer struggling to provide for the family’s basic needs and Martha’s education. Martha’s parents are alive but live separately in distant parts of the country in search of work. Her aunt, with occasional help from her father, has taken responsibility for Martha’s upbringing, despite the family’s financial challenges.
